Griffin named to D-10 all-star team

De'Vaughn Griffin, Oil City's senior speedster, was named Dec. 24 to the YDL/D9and10Sports.com District 10 all-stars.

The 140-pound Griffin was picked to the second team at wide receiver after catching 34 passes for 867 yards and 11 touchdowns this season. He scored 14 TDs overall while adding 126 yards rushing on 18 carries.

Click here for a look at the complete YDL team.

The only District 10 players named to the 4A all-state team Dec. 28 were the Zietz twins from General McLane, Isaac at QB and Jacob at WR. (J. Zietz in late December tore his ACL playing basketball and is out for the season.)

Nobody local made the Coaches Select all-state team announced this week. Still waiting for the ETN D-10 all-stars...

3 Oilers on D-10 'Super 72'

Three Oil City players were named to a District 10 "Super 72" all-star team announced Jan. 23 by the Erie Times News.

They were wide receiver De'Vaughn Griffin and offensive linemen Tanner Kightlinger and Tim Walentoski, all seniors.

The "Super 72" included 24 players on offense, 24 on defense and 24 linemen.

"The process of selecting the all-district team ins a long, grueling one for the staff of the Erie Times News. The staff reviews film, statistics and gets opinions from coaches about their own players and players from other teams," the paper said.

11 Oilers, 2 Knights honored; McLane, MASH dominate

The Region 6 football all-stars were announced Nov. 25 by the Erie Times News, and two  local players made the first team on both offense and defense.

Oil City's Tanner Kightlinger and Franklin's Jeremy Cunningham were honored on both the offensive and defensive lines by the region coaches. The only other two-way first team players were from region champion General McLane, lineman Mason Sayers and WR/DB Jacob Zietz, as with Kightlinger and Cunningham seniors.

Kightlinger is a repeat first team offensive selection from 2023.

Oil City had 11 players picked to the team and Franklin two.

Those picked were:

  • De'Vaughn Griffin, WR

  • Tanner Kightlinger, OL-DL

  • Noah Lucarelli, DL

  • Danny DeLong, LB

General McLane took up 22 places on the first and second teams -- 12 on the first team. Runnerup Meadville had 17 players picked. Six players from last-place Warren were honored -- all on the second team.

Player of the Year was Jacob Zietz. District 10 all-stars will be announced after the PIAA championship games.

Unanimous first team pick

Roman McFall's high school football career is over after last week's loss in the third round of the Texas 6A playoffs, but the former Oiler was a unanimous choice (all the coaches voted for him) at defensive end on the all-district team.

(Districts in Texas are the same as regions here -- and leagues most places.)

McFall  made a fourth down interception with two minutes left to preserve the Canyon (New Braunsfels, Texas) Cougars' 38-35  playoff win over Veterans Memorial on Nov. 22.

The "Coogs" trailed 35-17 in the third quarter and 35-23 with 11 minutes to play but rallied to hike their record to 8-4.

However, they dropped a 39-36 decision to the Harlans Hawks in the third round of the playoffs this past weekend.

McFall (6-4, 195) played QB during his days with the Oil City Junior High team, but switched to DE after stepping foot in Texas in 2022. The erstwhile hoops star has been a starter in football since his sophomore season.

ABOUT THIS SITE

If you are from Anywhere, USA, and happened to stumble upon this site, Franklin and Oil City are about eight miles apart along Route 8 in Venango County, Pa. -- which is about halfway between Pittsburgh and Erie in the western part of the state.

yardsandpoints.com (formerly venangofootball.com and then route8rivalry.com) covers the grid doings of Oil City and Franklin high schools in Venango County. It also includes the football histories of the two schools, which date back to 1896, along with that of Venango Catholic (nee Christian and formerly St. Joseph in Oil City), which dropped the sport in the 1990s. VC has been in co-ops with Oil City and Franklin since then. I've recently included more stuff on basketball concerning Venango County's five PIAA schools as well as the doings in other sports, fall through spring.
